Confessions of a Medical Heretic By Robert Mendelsohn, MD

Reviewed by Patricia Lentz, mom of five.

In his book Confessions of a Medical Heretic, Dr. Robert Mendelsohn, MD, states that, “Modern Medicine is a religion, it is neither art or science. It needs powerful priests and devoted followers to exist.”  He states that modern medicine is based on FAITH, faith that the medicine prescribed will bring health and faith that the surgery will get rid of the disease. He even states that most of Modern Medicine is a threat to your well being as well as your personal freedom. This is just the beginning of the wisdom found in this book.

When I was a child, my parents fell under the trance-like authority of modern medicine. From birth on I had been hyper sensitive to both food and the environment, developing numerous allergies and even disabling asthma. I was given eleven different steroids for over 25 years. It got to the point where a “daily dose” was required just to function and not end up in ER. Many times those who bucked the prevailing medical philosophy gave me hope and a way to find alternatives. Dr. Mendelsohn is now one of these.

The opinions of other “experts,” Mendelsohn says, “should be considered worthless until proven otherwise by the strongest possible evidence.” (pg 163). Often I’ve wondered how different my life would have been had someone simply asked, “Why did Patricia get this?”

And Mendelsohn does more than ask, “Why?” He taught his medical students at Northwestern University and University of Illinois to question what they were being taught. If you dip into his book, see if you don’t find yourself singing the Hallelujah Chorus as well. Here’s a man whose writings have proven to be quite prophetic. In 1979 he confessed that he had relied too heavily on what his professors had told him. His book shows why you should do the same and why you want a “medical heretic” as your doctor

The Epilogue by John McKnight crystallizes what Mendelsohn’s thoughts… McKnight states that God, and a belief in God is good. Politics are good as well, and so is the practice of medicine within healthy parameters. But leave out God, marry politics to medicine, and we are stuck with a system that educates our doctors, tells them how to diagnose illnesses and which prescriptions to write for the cure (regardless of whether patients get better).

Lessons hard learned from the hands of medical professionals have taught me not to go to the altar of today’s allopathic medicine, not to trust any man with a long white coat. There have been, and always will be, alternatives. You have options. Often, it’s the food you eat. Food has the potential to make us sick, or make us well. I know first hand the damage the medical profession can do and what I must do to counter that.

However we first came to OLM, we all arrive in Pasadena on Wednesday afternoons to pick up great products that have wonderful healing properties. Once there we enjoy swapping moments of healthy and helpful encouragement as we sweep in and swoop out.  Then, armed with raw milk and cheese, bison, and eggs of the highest quality, good enough to eat raw, we together fight the battle for health that is won, one choice at a time.

Pick up a copy of Robert Mendelsohn’s book from OLM’s library and develop the courage you need for the choices you make for the health of you and your family. You won’t regret it. And don’t miss his other book, How to Raise a Healthy Child In Spite of Your Doctor, also at our library.
